Scope

These Professional Qualifications define minimum qualifications for an individual to serve as Crew Member for professional archaeological studies conducted in California. These include investigations carried out to comply with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

The Crew Member is responsible for conducting field and laboratory tasks as assigned by and under the direction of the Crew Leader or above and demonstrates the following characteristics:

• Communicates effectively verbally and in written format
• Responds positively to direction, change in direction, and correction
• Punctual and dependable
• Takes thorough, accurate, and legible notes
• Ability to accurately document data/artifact collection (i.e., provenience and/or site context) and site features
• Adheres to safety protocol

The Crew Member is appropriately qualified in relation to the type and scope of the work proposed, and meets the following minimum qualifications in Education and Experience.

Technician I

• Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent, AND
  • Training and guidance by member of the professional archaeology community
• Experience
  • Demonstrated interest in professional archaeology, AND

Training and guidance by member of the professional archaeology community

Technician II

• Education
  • Undergraduate coursework in equivalent to Introduction to Archaeology and Introduction to Physical Anthropology
• Experience
  • Six (6) months’ experience successfully completing archaeological studies at the Technician I level

Technician III

• Education
  • Undergraduate coursework equivalent to Archaeological Methods and Theory, California Archaeology, and Ethnographic Analysis
• Experience
  • Twelve (12) months’ experience successfully completing archaeological studies at the Technician II level
  • Field experience equivalent to two weeks of survey, two weeks of excavation, and two weeks of laboratory processing and analysis; survey and excavation should include production of location maps on a USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle, site sketch map, excavation unit plan, and excavation unit profile
