Additionally, the Committee is dedicated to voicing the concerns and issues of student members, who represent approximately a quarter of the SCA membership. Questions? Contact the SCA Business Office at office@scahome.org.

Application Instructions

Deadline: November 15

To promote the participation of its student members in the association, the SCA Board has established an opportunity for two graduate students to act as Co-Chair for the Student Affairs Committee. The position is for a two-year appointment, including attendance at two SCA Board meetings on the Sunday of the annual meeting. The SCA Board hopes that increasing student participation will encourage a desire to serve the association in future years.

Eligibility and Term: The successful candidate must be a graduate student and a registered student member (in good standing) of the SCA at the time of application and for the duration of her/his appointment. The position is for two years and runs from when the committee makes its selection of a successful candidate, through two annual meetings ending when the replacement Co-Chair is selected.

Role: The role of the student Co-Chair is mainly to 1) organize the student events at the annual meeting, 2) maintain the Facebook page by informing students of SCA related events, 3) bring to the SCA Board issues of interest and concern of the student members, and 4) assist the SCA Director in maintaining the SCA campus liaison list for the webpage. During the first year in the Co-Chair position, the student will be mentored by the second year Co-Chair and essentially assist the existing Co-Chair in running the Student Affairs Committee.

Support: The successful candidate will receive $250 towards travel costs each year.

Application Process: Please provide a CV, letter of reference from your main advisor regarding leadership potential, a cover letter providing details concerning your status in your degree program (e.g., years in program and requirements completed such as ABD), and a short essay (of 500 words or fewer) indicating what you value as a student member of the SCA and how you would promote student membership and involvement in the society.

Applications must be received no later than November 15.

Email your Cover letter, CV and Essay as a SINGLE pdf to office@scahome.org. Your advisor’s letter should be emailed directly to the business office manager.

Evaluation and Decisions: Applications will be reviewed and ranked by a subcommittee of the SCA Board members chaired by the Southern VP and including the current student liaison providing no conflict of interest exists. Decisions of the committee will be confirmed by the SCA Board at the January board meeting. Recipients will be notified after the January meeting. The successful applicant will be recognized at the SCA Business Meeting.
